Taking a chance
I like stories.
The one thing guranteed in a military career is that at some point, no matter how successful you have been, it is going to end. The military has invested a lot of money to help prepare the transitioning veteran find happiness and success on the outside. The problem with many of these resources is that they are an impersonal, one-sized fits all approach, that don’t speak adequately to the lifestyle and emotional components of this change. I want to create a repository of stories from those who have walked this path, so others may learn from their experiences.
Colin Powell in his book, My American Journey, recounts a story from his own retirement. Following a parade given in his honor, he began to think over his career as he walked back to his car and climbed inside. It wasn’t until he heard a tapping on the window that his trance was broken and he looked up to see his wife staring at him through the glass. She proceeded to inform him he needed to get out of the back seat of the car and drive them home. I like this story because it shows that seperating from the military is a significant transition for us all.
